Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

If you are wondering what to expect when you attend a class at Culinaria Cooking School, we have all of your questions answered right here! If you still have a question that is not addressed below, please enter your email address and question on our Contact Us page and we’d be happy to follow up with you, or if it’s during business hours, please feel free to call us at the school at 703-865-7920.

What time should I arrive for my class?
We recommend arriving approximately 10-15 minutes prior to class. Please remain in the Reception Area until you are called in to the kitchen. Once the classroom is ready, the instructors and/or assistants will welcome you into the kitchen and take attendance.

I’d like to take leftovers home. Is this allowed?
Due to insurance restrictions, we are unable to allow any food to leave the premises. Please come hungry and plan on eating the meal prepared for you (or that you prepared!) here.

Should I have dinner before attending my class, or will I be eating there?
You will be eating here! Our goal is to have the first menu item prepared and served within 30 minutes of the class start time. If this is later than you normally eat, we recommend having a light bite before class to tide you over.

Will I get a copy of the recipes made during class?
Yes! Every student gets a recipe packet at the beginning of class so that they can follow along with the instructor in the Demonstration classes and in the Participation classes. You are welcome and encouraged to take these recipe packets home with you after class and try them.

Do you serve wine during class?
We are happy to serve wine to those students over 21 during most of our classes (morning and baking classes are usually excluded). You can expect to receive at least 2 glasses of wine over the course of the class. In Participation classes, the assistants serve wine once the knives are put away. In Demonstration classes, the assistants usually serve wine with the first course.

Am I allowed to bring my own wine?
Per our ABC license, absolutely no alcohol may be brought into the school.

Are pictures allowed?
Pictures are allowed and encouraged! Our instructors love it when you feel that a dish is camera worthy, so please click away!

I need to cancel my registration. What options do I have?
If it is prior to 3 days before the class starts, please call the school during business hours and we can help you obtain a school credit towards a future class or offer you a refund. We are unable to offer refunds or credits for a class registration that is canceled within 3 days of the class because our instructors have already purchased ingredients on your behalf. If you are unable to attend, you are welcome to send someone else in your place. Just notify the office so we can inform the instructor.

I’m taking a Participation class. What should I wear?
For your safety in the Participation kitchen, we require all shoes to be closed-toe with no or a very low heel. We also ask that all long hair be tied back prior to class. Other than that, we just ask that you dress comfortably. You will be provided with an apron to use, but be aware that just like in your home kitchen, you may not want to wear your best clothes.

I’m taking a class with a friend/spouse. Will we be able to work together?
If you registered together, every effort will be made to group your party together. In many classes, you may also be working in a group with additional people as well.

I prefer to work by myself or with just my friend/spouse. Is this possible?
Generally, students are grouped based on the number of students that register for the class. Due to space and time constraints, this means students are often grouped into teams (this can be 2, 3, or 4 people) and work together to create the meal.

I’ve never taken a Participation cooking class before. What can I expect?
In our Participation classes, our goal is to teach you the proper cooking techniques for a wide variety of foods and cuisines. Upon arrival you will be given an apron and recipe packet. The instructor will demonstrate how menu items should be prepared and then each team will use the provided ingredients to create the dish. You may eat some parts of the meal as you go along or all together once you’ve finished cooking. The instructor will be available throughout the class to answer questions and help you if needed.

Do I need any previous cooking experience to enjoy the class?
No previous experience is required! We encourage you to ask questions if there is something you don’t understand. There are no bad questions and our instructors are here to help so that you can replicate a recipe on your own at home.

Can I bring my child or teen to class with me?
Generally, our evening classes are designed for adults. We offer many classes especially for kids and teens as well as some parent and child classes. In our regular adult classes, every student must be at least 18 years old to attend and 21 to consume alcohol.
